The Seesaw of Life

I think my experience of life and death in food production is more like a seesaw of life than a “circle of life”. In Barnward Irony, Gene Logsdon talks about his troubles trying to keep broilers alive in the heat – a problem we had at The Wallow in 2011, our first year raising broilers. We are in a record-breaking heat wave as I write this, and as we are learning, these broilers have very… Keep Reading

Snow – January 2011

Last week I was buried in my laptop, and Joshua said, “It’s snowing outside.” I spun around to look out the window, and it wasn’t just snowing – it was snowing HUGE snowflakes that were sticking! I ran out with my camera because it was so pretty. Keep Reading

Heating Isn’t A Challenge

I’ve been seeing “challenges” related to heating your home pop up on different eco-crunchy-green blogs I read. One is the Freeze Yer Buns Challenge at Crunchy Chicken and another is The No-Heat Challenge at The Non-Consumer Advocate. I’ve never gotten interested in the various challenges, and I think the main reason is that I’m not really trying to “challenge” myself, I’m just trying to do what makes sense for me. The Wallow came with a wonderful wood-burning stove installed, and what makes sense here is to heat the house with wood. Keep Reading

A Year At The Wallow

Joshua and I moved into the Wallow sometime in October 2009, so it’s just now been one year here. I was driving up to the house the other day and thinking to myself how much I still love it. I’m prone to boredom and used to moving around a lot. It’s easy for me to fall in love with a place and just as easy for me to lose interest. The Wallow still delights me every single day, though, in every single way. Here’s a look at the seasons of the last year from around the Wallow. Keep Reading

The Opposite of Now

I cleaned up my computer a bit last night, deleting unused files and programs and sorting everything so I could find it all easier. I ran across some photos that I’d forgotten about. It’s strange to see photos of The Wallow covered in snow, when it’s 90 degrees out right now. Since we’re not using air conditioning it’s 80 degrees inside. Joshua and I have taken several measures to help cool our home naturally, but at the height of summer, there’s only so much you can do! It was fun to run across these pictures from the complete opposite weather. Keep Reading

Winter Kitteh

Here at the Wallow, Joshua and I had a nice tail-end to fall with our new cat, Juli, usually affectionately just called Kitteh. Now that it’s almost winter and it’s much colder outside, she doesn’t have much interest in staying out. Very occasionally, she sits at the door to go outside, but then just a minute or two later she’s back at the door wanting back in. Keep Reading
