Pig Playtime

The pig adventure for 2011 is well under way. I’m very happy with this year’s pigs so far. They do a much more thorough job of eating from the pasture and are more active and alert than last year’s pigs. I’m not giving them a wallow this year, since last year’s wallow got kind of nasty. This means I go out to let them play in the hose during the heat of the day instead.… Keep Reading

Sheep!

This weekend was another huge happening at The Wallow. We got sheep! Let me introduce Big Mama: Mary and Baby Jeebus: Buck: And Jake: Jake is Big Mama’s baby. Baby Jeebus is Mary’s lamb. Jake is still nursing, but I haven’t seen Baby Jeebus nurse. While Big Mama is probably 2-3 years old, this is probably Mary’s first year. She’s much smaller. I might try to milk Big Mama, but Joshua and I have decided… Keep Reading

Yes, I Have Considered Goats

(Photo credit publicenergy) Joshua and I are planning to get sheep this spring. Every time one of us mentions this, someone says, “Have you considered goats?” Every. Single. Time. We’ve been planning for sheep since last fall, and we talk to people about our homesteading adventures a lot, which means I have heard, “Have you considered goats?” over and over and over and over again. The problem with this is not just the repetition. The… Keep Reading

A Year At The Wallow

Joshua and I moved into the Wallow sometime in October 2009, so it’s just now been one year here. I was driving up to the house the other day and thinking to myself how much I still love it. I’m prone to boredom and used to moving around a lot. It’s easy for me to fall in love with a place and just as easy for me to lose interest. The Wallow still delights me every single day, though, in every single way. Here’s a look at the seasons of the last year from around the Wallow. Keep Reading

April 2010 Pig Update

Joshua and I are keeping two pigs this year, Yorkie and Hampie. Some of our friends are buying the second pig from us at the end of the season. I recently sent them an email to update them on various thoughts about the pigs, which I thought I’d print here for y’all, too, as well as some recent pictures of the piggies: Keep Reading

Weeds to Pasture

The Wallow has lots of distinct parts to it. There’s the house, of course. There’s the two-story barn, which now contains Joshua’s workshop. There’s the hill, which is behind the house. There’s the forest-ish area on the way to the creek, where the bee hives are. There’s the front yard, which will be the garden area come spring. There’s The Bowl, an area made up of driveway and concrete walls at basement level, making it seem like you’re in a bowl of concrete. There’s The Island, a grass and tree space between the two main driveways where Joshua chops wood and wood that has been delivered is stored. And finally, there’s the area we’ve been calling the field or the pasture.

The field is about a 1/2 acre of space, enclosed in a high-quality wooden fence. This is the area that we plan to use for keeping animals. However, like the rest of the property, it had been completely taken over by brushy weeds. Keep Reading
