The Seesaw of Life

I think my experience of life and death in food production is more like a seesaw of life than a “circle of life”. In Barnward Irony, Gene Logsdon talks about his troubles trying to keep broilers alive in the heat – a problem we had at The Wallow in 2011, our first year raising broilers. We are in a record-breaking heat wave as I write this, and as we are learning, these broilers have very… Keep Reading

Around The Wallow

I’ve got some longer posts coming up soon – promise! I’ve been spending a lot of time enjoying my Tiny Baby and getting ready for Alchemy, so I’m a bit behind on everything else. I’m spending a lot of time outside right now, so last week I took a few minutes to walk around The Wallow and photograph some of the things in my life these days. When I walk out my back door I… Keep Reading

What’s Happening Now

There’s a particular type of experience that comes with having a caring relationship with animals, whether they’re people or non-human animals. It’s the experience of having one kind of plan for your day, and then something happens with the animal and your day goes in an entirely different direction. This happens with friends. You think you’re about to sit down for dinner, but your friend calls and is stuck an hour away with a flat… Keep Reading

Newly Ranging Chickens

This past weekend, Joshua and I processed the remaining Cornish Cross chickens. We’ve got lots of chicken in the freezer now, ready for future nomming. Of the baby chicks from this year, that leaves three Barred Rocks and one Silkie, all of which we’re keeping as egg layers. With the Cornish Crosses gone, it’s time to start integrating the remaining chicks with our older birds. Today was the first step, which was opening their coop… Keep Reading

Animal Adventures

The last few days have brought a lot of animal adventures, and by “adventures” I mean stressful situations. A few days ago, during the first sheep-wrangling practice session, Buck (our ram) cut his leg on a cinder block in the barn. Joshua and I had some trouble determining how bad the cut was, but it was bleeding non-stop, so we tried to take Buck to the vet. After we got Buck into the truck (another stressful… Keep Reading

Baby Chicks 2011

Last Thursday morning, Joshua and I and two friends of ours went to buy baby chicks. The 19 babies are living in my bathtub right now! You can read more about the chicks in Joshua’s post about them. We got three kinds: a gray fuzzy Silkie that might be a hen or a rooster, 15 yellow Cornish Crosses that will become meat in the freezer in a couple of months, and 3 black striped Barred… Keep Reading
