Headed to Alchemy 2011
| September 27, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man |
On Wednesday I’m leaving for Alchemy 2011, but I’ll be back in a week with pictures to share. During that week, this pile of poles… …turns into a huge, awesome dome. I didn’t get pictures of the dome last year but I hope to this year. This past weekend, Joshua, Dylan, and I went to the land where Alchemy is held so Joshua could install some equipment for the event. Dylan enjoyed himself greatly: It’s… Keep Reading
Baby’s First Camping Trips
| August 2, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man, Parenting |
Only 10 days after Dylan was born we went camping at a burn event called Euphoria. It was great to introduce everyone to Dylan. It was a short trip, just two nights. In October we’ll be doing Alchemy, which will be a bit more involved: 5 nights long, plus we’ll be taking our theme camp, Fucking Awesome, so I’ll have a lot more to do at the burn. There will also be lots of people… Keep Reading
On Hold for Alchemy
| September 24, 2010 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man |
I’m about to hit the road to go to Alchemy, the Georgia burn. I’m helping organize a theme camp this year called Fucking Awesome, so I have been much busier with Alchemy prep than I have been in years past.
Joshua pointed out the other day that while we don’t celebrate religious holidays, burns are definitely holidays for us. Burns are events that mark the passage of time and give sustenance to the rest of the year. This year Alchemy is the only burn I’m attending, and I’ve turned it into a huge holiday. I have been preparing for it for months and months, and I’m far more excited about it than I ever was about opening gifts on Christmas morning. Keep Reading
Positive Sexuality
| June 3, 2010 | Posted by Issa under Think About It |
For Alchemy 2010, I’m running a theme camp called Fucking Awesome that’s centered around positive sexuality. We’re planning for everything from sex education classes to open orgies. I know a lot of people who do work to help bring a more positive view of sexuality to the people around them. Sometimes it seems like a lot of progress has been made, and sometimes it seems like sex will always be a dirty little secret in this culture. I wondered, How will we know when sex is actually viewed, culture-wide, as a positive thing? What will it look like? What will be different about our everyday lives? Keep Reading
Burning Man – Decommodification
| February 8, 2010 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man |
Burning Man is touted as a no-commerce event. It’s also viewed as a hippie/freak oasis miles away from the “default world”. The closer it gets to the event, though, the more grumbling I hear from people who are a little cynical about the ideals, because there is an insane amount of commerce going on. Keep Reading
Random Update on Me
| December 8, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Uncategorized |
Joshua and I have been trying to get pregnant for about three years, to one extent or another. We gave the non-medical route a year to work on its own. Then for a year or so we tried the half-assed medical route, which involved a doctor who would give me Clomid but not do much else. After two miscarriages, we spent several months on pause. Now, I’ve been added to Joshua’s insurance, and we’re ready to go the medical path to pregnancy, at least for a little while. Keep Reading
Alchemy 2009
| October 22, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man |
While Joshua and I closed on our new house in mid-September, we didn’t move until mid-October, because for the beginning of October we were participating in Alchemy, a Burning Man-related event in Georgia. I’ve tried before and failed, so I’m not going to attempt to describe a burn to you. If you’ve never been, you can probably tell from pictures whether it’s your kind of thing, in which case you should go. It’s always the pictures that speak the most to me about burn events, so I’ll just share some of the photos with you. None of these photos are mine. They are all borrowed from various artists from the Alchemy 2009 Flickr pool. Keep Reading
