The Occupy Movement as Cultural Resistance

John Duffy has written a post at Nature Bats Last called Occupy: Embrace what you are! I found the whole post interesting, as well as some of the comments. He starts out talking about how both the expected opponents and the presumed supporters have taken every cheap opportunity to criticize the Occupy Movement, citing their directionlessness, joblessness, and soaplessness, whether or not these things are true or even make any sense. The critics and even some people within… Keep Reading

Occupy

The revolution has begun, but I’m only watching from afar. I first heard about Occupy Wall Street (OWS) while I was at Alchemy, and I was immediately riveted. It is exactly what I want out of the beginnings of reform – messy, earnest, consensus-driven, wildly optimistic, and, of course, hitting many of my political buttons. I’m wary, though. Our culture is so forcefully stacked against any kind of meaningful change that I wonder if it’s really possible… Keep Reading

Roads?

What does it say about me that when I first saw this graph, I thought it was making a peak oil reference? Near my house, there’s a neighborhood of houses being built, an apartment complex being added on to, and a big section of road being greatly expanded. Why? I don’t get it. Keep Reading

Issa’s Top 5 Ways to Question Authority

Here are my top five: 1. Question… Keep Reading

Notice: Resources

I’m still taking it easy after Dylan’s arrival, and I haven’t written anything new yet. Here’s a quick little post I’ve had queued up for awhile, though: I like to look at ads and other media and notice what Mother Culture is trying to tell me. Here’s an ad that jumped out at me: I’m not sure exactly what Accenture does, and I couldn’t get much more information out of their website, but I find… Keep Reading

Culture Dust

(Photo credit BinaryApe) Dust is everywhere. We don’t see it, yet if you look on a shelf where things don’t get moved around much, there’s a layer of dust that has settled into the untouched spaces. If you happen to see a ray of light shining through a window in front of you, you think, “Holy shit! What is all that stuff floating there?” When this happens, it amuses me to look around suspiciously at… Keep Reading

Notice: Recession Billboards

There’s a billboard near by home that says, “Recession 101: Interesting fact about recessions…they end.”

What is this billboard trying to tell me? Why is this message worth someone spending a lot of money on? Keep Reading
