Headed to Alchemy 2011

On Wednesday I’m leaving for Alchemy 2011, but I’ll be back in a week with pictures to share. During that week, this pile of poles… …turns into a huge, awesome dome. I didn’t get pictures of the dome last year but I hope to this year. This past weekend, Joshua, Dylan, and I went to the land where Alchemy is held so Joshua could install some equipment for the event. Dylan enjoyed himself greatly: It’s… Keep Reading

Baby’s First Camping Trips

Only 10 days after Dylan was born we went camping at a burn event called Euphoria. It was great to introduce everyone to Dylan. It was a short trip, just two nights. In October we’ll be doing Alchemy, which will be a bit more involved: 5 nights long, plus we’ll be taking our theme camp, Fucking Awesome, so I’ll have a lot more to do at the burn. There will also be lots of people… Keep Reading

Burning Man – Radical Self-Reliance

From the Burning Man website: Radical Self-reliance: “Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.” People say that Burning Man will change your life. They say that you’ll go out to the desert and you’ll come back a different person. This is true for many people. After becoming a citizen of Black Rock City one button-up business-suit guy I knew became a wild and freaky traveler instead,… Keep Reading

On Hold for Alchemy

I’m about to hit the road to go to Alchemy, the Georgia burn. I’m helping organize a theme camp this year called Fucking Awesome, so I have been much busier with Alchemy prep than I have been in years past.

Joshua pointed out the other day that while we don’t celebrate religious holidays, burns are definitely holidays for us. Burns are events that mark the passage of time and give sustenance to the rest of the year. This year Alchemy is the only burn I’m attending, and I’ve turned it into a huge holiday. I have been preparing for it for months and months, and I’m far more excited about it than I ever was about opening gifts on Christmas morning. Keep Reading

Burning Man Packing List

I’m not headed to Black Rock City this year, but I’m enjoying hearing about others preparing. In lieu of Burning Man experiences to share this year, I thought I’d make a packing list post. The first year I went I looked at all sorts of packing lists and survival guides online and meshed all the info together. When I actually pack, my personal gear changes a bit each year, but I always start with a huge list and work my way down to what I actually end up taking. While there are some constants (water!), everyone’s packing will be different. Here’s a look at some of the things I think about when I pack for Burning Man. Keep Reading

Burning Man – Decommodification

Burning Man is touted as a no-commerce event. It’s also viewed as a hippie/freak oasis miles away from the “default world”. The closer it gets to the event, though, the more grumbling I hear from people who are a little cynical about the ideals, because there is an insane amount of commerce going on. Keep Reading

Alchemy 2009

While Joshua and I closed on our new house in mid-September, we didn’t move until mid-October, because for the beginning of October we were participating in Alchemy, a Burning Man-related event in Georgia. I’ve tried before and failed, so I’m not going to attempt to describe a burn to you. If you’ve never been, you can probably tell from pictures whether it’s your kind of thing, in which case you should go. It’s always the pictures that speak the most to me about burn events, so I’ll just share some of the photos with you. None of these photos are mine. They are all borrowed from various artists from the Alchemy 2009 Flickr pool. Keep Reading
