Processing Roosters

This is a cautionary tale. On a homesteading blog that Joshua and I both read, a reader recently asked how to get started with various “green” and “getting back to the land” type ventures. The blog author suggested starting slowly so as not to get overwhelmed. Joshua and I agreed that that’s not really our method. We like to just jump on in when the time is right, picking things up as they come along.… Keep Reading

Issa’s Reviews: Manufacturing Depression by Gary Greenberg

Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease by Gary Greenberg – FOUR STARS I’m interested in the topic of depression right now, since I believe myself to have serious depression and as soon as I get un-pregnant I’m going to seek both talking treatment and medicinal treatment. That makes this book from Gary Greenberg come along at an excellent time for me, since it is decidedly skeptical on the question of depression as… Keep Reading

Manners and Children as People

Today on my Facebook page, I ran across a thread on children and manners. I run across this from time to time, and it nearly always irks me, although I rarely get very upset about it. People feel differently about manners, and people feel differently about how to teach children things. Fine. This thread got me particularly bothered, though, and rather than reply defensively in my friend’s thread, I thought I’d expand on it here.… Keep Reading

Types of Large Gauge Jewelry

When I first stretched my earlobes to 0 gauge, the types of available jewelry were confusing to me. There were so many new terms! Plugs, talons, tapers, tunnels, etc. And then there’s the materials: steel, acrylic, bone, etc. I stretched to 00 gauge awhile back, so I was looking at jewelry again, and I figured I’d write the guide I was looking for in the first place. In case you’re curious about all the different… Keep Reading

Pregnancy: 27 Weeks

I’m officially in the third trimester now, and that makes a bit of difference to my state of mind. I can tell myself that it’s almost over, and then, BABY! Physical stuff: I slacked off on managing my blood sugar in the second trimester, because it was just so ridiculously upsetting to me. I’m back on track with monitoring and keeping it in check, and I’m sure that I can keep it up for three… Keep Reading

Eating your placenta – are there any benefits?

This is a guest post from Olivia, a journalist and solo mom to two great kids, who regularly blogs at WriteAboutBirth.com where she writes about unassisted homebirth and many other topics relating to pregnancy, birthing, and babies. I’ve been mulling over whether or not to eat some of my placenta after birth, so I’m especially pleased to feature this post from her on placenta eating. Enjoy! Eating your placenta – are there any benefits? Eating… Keep Reading

00 Gauge Ears

Back in August 2009, I posted about how I’d stretched my ears to 0 gauge. But I completely forgot to post when I went to 00 gauge! I did it in August this year, so they could be stretched by Alchemy. The stretching process was completely unremarkable. I got some tapered 00 gauge talons, put them in, and gradually over the course of 6-8 hours, pushed them through. No problem at all. Here’s the jewelry… Keep Reading
