How Much Meat From A Pig
| January 31, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Animals |
Last year I raised two pigs. This year other people I know are interested in having a freezer full of pork, too, and I’m raising a total of 5-6 pigs. I can’t legally sell the meat, but I can raise the pigs and then my friends pay for the meat at the processor’s. I’m so excited about having pigs around The Wallow again! I’ve been busily putting together all the information that everyone needs to… Keep Reading

Here are some interesting items that have recently run across my screen. (Photo by lrargerich) “On keeping one’s feet on the ground” from fast grow the weeds is about the calming effects of being involved with farm animals. This post is about goats and cheese, but it resonated with me anyway. There’s certainly a peace of some kind that comes from the care of farm animals, and I’m really looking forward to having pigs again.… Keep Reading
How To Be Condescending About Weight-Loss
| January 27, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Fat Acceptance |
(Image courtesy Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. All images that appear on posts about weight at LoveLiveGrow will be of fat people with heads.) I read a lot of stuff on the internet. I’ve got my search patterns pretty well dialed in so that most of what I read is stuff I want to read. I’m either probably going to like it, or I’m probably going to enjoy not liking it. Every now and then,… Keep Reading
Baby Bellyaching – January 2011
| January 26, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Pregnancy and Birth |
What better way to feel better about pregnancy than to whine about parenting! Baby Bellyaching is my monthly bitch-fest about the modern commercial baby care that’s pushed in mainstream parenting magazines. (Don’t miss last month’s!) Special Note: Other than this note, Baby Bellyaching is exempt from any sort of disclaimers, examination of privilege, or acknowledging people’s different reasons and situations. This is just a space for me to bitch. This month I got American Baby (Jan… Keep Reading
Pregnancy: 24 Weeks
| January 25, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Pregnancy and Birth |
I haven’t made a pregnancy update in 5 weeks, and I don’t feel like making one now. I feel some sort of obligation to, though, both because I know that other people want to hear about it and because it’s probably good for me to have a record. So here it goes. I pretty much hate being pregnant. Well, maybe it’s not really hate, but I find the whole process obnoxious as hell. I don’t… Keep Reading
Recycling
| January 24, 2011 | Posted by Issa under Simple-Eco-Happy |
I was recently a participant in a conversation with a man who runs a recycling center (let’s call him Thomas). I’ve got no particular beef with Thomas – he seemed pretty committed to overall environmental issues. And I’ve got no particular beef with recycling as an industry – it’s what we’ve got, and it serves a valuable function in the system we’re in. However, talking to him revealed some places where our perspectives really differ.… Keep Reading

I haven’t done this in a bit, so I’ve got quite a backlog of interesting links to share! “Don’t know much about energy” is a brief little look at what Americans know – and don’t know – about where their energy comes from. “A year in the life of a foster parent” tells the fascinating and heartbreaking tale of one family’s foster experience. I found myself tearing up on more than one occasion. “Should White… Keep Reading
