Chickens in the Yard

Joshua and I got four chickens a couple of months ago. Joshua built a movable chicken coop for them, which they’ve been kept in full time. They are laying eggs regularly, now, very consistently three a day. This past week, Joshua decided it was time to let them out during the day. Now, the four chickens wander about the yard during the day and wander back into the coop in the evening.

It’s so much fun to watch them in the yard. They have what we call “the chicken dance”, where they scruffle the ground with their feet, take two steps back, and then peck the ground, all in rapid succession. Elsewhere on the internet, I’d heard of “chicken TV”, which is being entertained by watching the chickens much longer than it seems should be possible. Chicken TV is in full effect here, especially now that they’re in the yard.

Having the chickens out and about in the yard makes them much more photograph-able, too!

Plus, here’s the newest cat addition to The Wallow. Basement Cat loves the chickens. She follows them around the yard and naps with them under the trees. I caught her licking her lips, but so far, she hasn’t actually tried to eat a chicken.
