Welcome to The Wallow

myhouse350The past eleven days have been a whirlwind of moving, unpacking, sorting, organizing, and getting started on project after project. Joshua and I finally moved into our new home, and we’ve been having a great time settling in.

It took a few days of being here, but our home has acquired a name. Once our internet was set up, we needed a name for the network, which necessitated getting the whole place named. We plan to keep pigs next summer, and I joke about how I’m going to wallow in the mud with them. Joshua threw out “The Wallow” as a possible name for our homestead. I headed to the dictionary to check the official definition of “wallow” as a noun. In addition to “a muddy area or one filled with dust used by animals for wallowing”, another definition for wallow is “a state of degradation or degeneracy”. Joshua and I revel in the fact that our stance on morality is often at odds with the rest of our culture. Upon reading that definition, I hooted with laughter, and “The Wallow” immediately became the name for our new home.

In the past few days, we have set up most of the rooms in our home, Joshua has tilled three garden beds and built a work bench, I’ve begun building a crafting table, Joshua mowed and we both raked up the grass to become hay for later, we worked on hoeing the weeds off the brick walkways, we ran cable for internet, we’ve grilled out several nights, we sit on our front porch swing and enjoy the view, we’ve met some neighbors, and so many other random bits of this and that.

More detailed posts are coming about what all I’ve been up to here and what’s coming next. But for now, for this moment, it’s such a relief to be sitting in my new home, most of the boxes unpacked, settling into a routine, and finally really being right where I want to be (and writing about it!)

My little homesteading adventure at The Wallow has finally begun, and I am so happy.
