Where the Wild Things Are – Movie Review
| October 29, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Uncategorized |
I don’t remember the book Where The Wild Things Are from my childhood, but I worked for 11 years as a nanny and came to know it quite well. At first, it made no sense to me. I would read it aloud to children but wouldn’t get any meaning from it. Then I heard a line of the book spoken by Leo Starwind in the middle of a song of his. Starwind spoke the line in a very particular, distinct, dramatic voice. I went home and read the story aloud in this voice, and instantly my love, understanding, and connection to the tale clicked into place.
That may be a strange story of coming to love a children’s book, but it is a strange book indeed, and the movie blows it up into the reality-sized strangeness of the emotional landscape that is real life. The movie Where The Wild Things Are takes the barest hints into the mind of Max offered up in the book and fiercely and fearlessly expands on those clues into a dark and dirty, uncomfortably formidable movie. Bread and Herbs

Here at The Wallow, a thing or two has been happening in the kitchen. I’ve been getting used to having an electric stove, but I also got a gas outdoor grill, so there’s also been some grilling out. I made amazingly yummy chicken drumsticks on my first attempt at grilling.
Joshua is the primary yummy-maker in our kitchen, though. We were both so excited when he made the first loaf of bread in the new house: Keep Reading
Alchemy 2009
| October 22, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Burning Man |
While Joshua and I closed on our new house in mid-September, we didn’t move until mid-October, because for the beginning of October we were participating in Alchemy, a Burning Man-related event in Georgia. I’ve tried before and failed, so I’m not going to attempt to describe a burn to you. If you’ve never been, you can probably tell from pictures whether it’s your kind of thing, in which case you should go. It’s always the pictures that speak the most to me about burn events, so I’ll just share some of the photos with you. None of these photos are mine. They are all borrowed from various artists from the Alchemy 2009 Flickr pool. Keep Reading
Noticing Nature
| October 21, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Nature |
Ever since moving into The Wallow, I’ve been noticing the little details of nature more often. Are there more spiders in this house? More birds in this yard? More bugs in this grass? Maybe. Or maybe I’m just paying more attention to these kinds of details. In any case, I am happy to be settled into a place where I notice the growth of life all around me. Keep Reading
Welcome to The Wallow

In the past few days, we have set up most of the rooms in our home, Joshua has tilled three garden beds and built a work bench, I’ve begun building a crafting table, Joshua mowed and we both raked up the grass to become hay for later, we worked on hoeing the weeds off the brick walkways, we ran cable for internet, we’ve grilled out several nights, we sit on our front porch swing and enjoy the view, we’ve met some neighbors, and so many other random bits of this and that. Keeping Chickens: The Essential Guide by Jeremy Hobson and Celia Lewis
| October 12, 2009 | Posted by Issa under Animals |
Joshua picked up because he’s interested in having chickens right away on our homestead. While chickens will not be my main focus, I wanted to have an overview of the topic and so I read this book, too. Keep Reading
Compost Squash

Awhile back, a mystery plant began to grow in my compost! Something was alive and green and growing in there, so it was rescued and planted. Keep Reading
